Enjoying Music with Sony

I have always enjoyed purchasing and utilizing Sony Canada products. They are renowned for their quality. Right now I own a Sony stereo system and a Sony AM/FM Walkman, both of which I purchased over five years ago. Both units are still working perfectly.

Last week I noticed that one of the older Sony MP3 Player Walkmans was on sale both in Canada and in the United States, but I have decided to wait for the new model, which the local electronics store says will be out soon. Then I'll have to find an easy way to quickly build up my music library. I'll be looking for inexpensive (but legal) playlists of songs, preferably a great range and variety of styles from all eras. Recently I began thinking about setting up trade show booths and banner stands. Toronto is having a big technology trade show on April 30, 2008.

I am probably too late to get ready for this April trade show in Toronto, but next time I will get ready well ahead of time. A CSV file contains comma separated values, where each line is an entry and each comma-separated column is a data entry for a particular category. For example, two entries for the data date, size, age, and sex might look like

In addition to the sample lines shown above, the first record in a CSV file are generally referred to as column headers.

A few astute observers claim that since politicians cannot solve the big problems, they get their constituents and minions to cause trouble for "the little guys"so that it looks like government is getting something done. I would say that the same can be said about big-time Internet advertising publishers: They go after the small-time clickers, surfers, and bloggers who make less than minimum wage on the Net. They start "witch hunts" in order to deflect attention from the fact that they have a very hard time making the world obey whatever temporary rules they dream up during their unending quest to protect their multi-million (or multi-billion) dollar profits. They call these phony mass actions of theirs "The Wisdom of Crowds." Any election run on a technical platform rationalized as something called "The Wisdom of Crowds" would attract the public scorn of every newspaper in the world. In the United States, the American Civil Liberties Union (the ACLU) would assist in the prosecution of any organization that utilized the so-called wisdom of crowds as the basis of government and democratic representation. Yes, it seems that blogger.com's, blogspot.com's, opera.com's, and technorati.com's minions (a.k.a. editors) are made from identical pots of suspect stew. They have learned a means of deflecting attention away from their bosses' burgeoning advertising revenues: they get their hundreds of thousands of unpaid dupes to waste a lot of time and make a lot of noise. I like atspace.com. It is a very reliable host, and it is interesting that the owners have mentioned "the intolerance of the old data center to the abuse issues that arose recently." A lot of mindless intolerance is perpetrated on the Internet every minute of every day. Take bloglinker.com, for example. The site was down for part of the summer, and that downtime caused its members' sites to stall and not load properly - visitors and customers could not properly view bloglinker's members' web sites, not unless the site owners removed the javascript bloglinker had given them. Bloglinker's owner, Zaeem Maqsood, promptly blamed his web hosting company (he claimed that they shut him down without notice, and that they did not save a copy of his database). Maqsood then went on to ban commercial sites from bloglinker, even the semi-commercial sites that had joined months before. (Whatever he means by "commercial." Perhaps it was just that he had not clearly asked commercial sites to stay away, or maybe he had not explained himself. Did he mean all sites pertaining to commercial ventures, irrespective of whether the sites made money or not? When Maqsood was in school, his professors required explanations, not three-word generalizations. But now, as a self-professed e-hunter, he presents vague four-word English constructions to disabled persons and to foreign non-English-speaking Internet surfers. If I am a semi-educated handicapped Filipino, and my site does not make money even though it should, and I do not expect it will ever pay for my time, why would I call it a commercial web site?) Then in August Maqsood asked his membership to hunt down all the "commercial" sites so that he could try to label them spam and then ban them. I say maybe the web host that kicked him out and lost his database was anticipating his witch hunt. But back to atspace.com. According to recent news, hackers are invading your home computers from accounts they registered with free web-hosting services. And believe me, the moderators of forums such as those hosted on www.freewebspace.net are too immature and unimaginative to offer real support or protection (they wrap themselves up in trivial matters and, as suspects, unjustly judge so-called (or alleged) behavioral infractions; they make up their own "definitions" of common words, and they apply their rules differently to different people). The fact that the www.freewebspace.net message-board/forum moderators try to defend themselves by making generalizations about "all forums" on the Internet, shows that www.freewebspace.net is not on the up-and-up. The Free Host 90megs.com Brought Down By Hackers??

It took a couple days before the 90megs.com administrators let us know they had been hacked (and down below here you can see what we said before 90megs contacted us in the forum). They have let us sign up again, but now they say our sites will contain their paid advertising, and we no longer have cPanel. (90megs says, "Please notice that your free web site have banners on it. Feel free to upgrade to our ad-free hosting packages, for just $3.95 per month.") Here's what they got around to telling us in one of the forums:

Sorry for all the problems that we have had lately. Some accounts were deleted by a hacker and we are in the process of fixing the site and script that we use to create the free accounts. Anyone that had their account deleted will have to sign up again here: http://90megs.com/cgi-bin/xpanel/register.cgi its not pretty yet, but we want memebers to get their sites back. We have some backups of some files, but it will be a while before we can recover any info from them. Again I am sorry that this happened, but we are hiring 2 full time admins to monitor the server and answer any tech support questions.

Next time you notice that the server's down, login to your cPanle (if you can) and click "Service Status" (it's the top entry of the bottom left hand menu). You'll probably notice that the server load is very high. 08-09-2005, 07:09 PM right now is down too. it goes down every so often. few times a day (not month). and sometimes my site loads very slow. i am not trying to compain. i have one other site hosted on other free host, it never goes down. but i use 90megs cause it have some good features. 09-03-2005, 06:19 PM yeah now it's a 2nd day straight. come on somebody do something.

The easiest way to avoid all the forum crud during a web search is to add the phrase -forum -forums to the search queries (i.e., to the search questions) you type into the Google, Yahoo, and MSN search boxes. Redflagdeals.com - Deals? Junk? You get what you waste your time for. Today, I e-mailed the management of a relatively high-profile Canadian forum whose sole purpose is to rake in money from advertisers while promoting free or discounted samples and sales promotions. The site masquerades as generosity incarnate, while its advertisers' relatives and minions masquerade as "red-flag" bargain hunters who want to waste their free time posting information about the products of multi-billion dollar corporations for nothing. (In addition, I sent copies of this e-mail to the Better Business Bureau.)

Thank you for responding to my request that you remove my posts from your forum. However, except for one [obviously trivial and absolutely questionable] warning last spring, soon after I joined the forum, I was NOT told that I was trying to exploit the forum for monetary gain, and 99% of my posts (or maybe all but one or two) remained on the forum as original threads, with both your members and one moderator adding positive and supportive comments and additions. As far as money goes, I only began advertising last April or May and have only made around $65 total [but it is pending], with 95% of that coming from Google Adsense (and I'm sure that 99.9% of those clicks on Adsense did not come from members of [your forum] . . . I have my own . . . following . . . who enter my site in more direct ways). If I was concerned about making click and/or referral money off your members, I would not have asked you to remove my posts . . . they contained links to my sites. Since you enjoy exaggerating my actions, I am happy to avoid your forum (I usually avoid forums anyway, as they contain a lot of crap and very little of value.) At 51 years of age (and with my Internet activity serving as a subjective experiment that will later contribute to my hardcopy writing in the printed media), I am not particularly concerned about forums. And I find that in the real world, in the malls and on the street, business people are far more courteous and mature and professional (they don't act like peevish teenagers). No one who knows me would have anything to do with [your forum]. (My friends and connections are very, very well connected to the rich or the famous or to Microsoft. We have all contributed quite a lot to Canada.) Other than our concerns re. investments (and we don't invest with the likes of [you]), we don't really care about . . . Other than $60 worth of coffee change, my money does not arise from my Internet activities.

12 September 2005: Like I said above, I e-mailed copies of my complaint re. redflagdeals.com to the Better Business Bureau. Today the Better Business Bureau replied: "If you wish to place a complaint please do so through the web or if this is for our information only, thank you." As part of "recent hosting news" (30 June 2005), on http://freepgs.com/ledbetter/wordpress/?page_id=82, I wrote,

In fact, quite a few web hosts and forum leaders and webmasters (everywhere) resort to bully tactics and level slanderous accusations at anyone who complains. I have seen this type of behavior many times in . . . Blogexplosion is very immature and resorts to gimmicks. The owners hope to give their advertisers an audience composed of young narcissists and political hacks. And they send out quite a bit of useless e-mail. In fact, Blogexplosion is just another phony. It's just a crummy traffic/hit exchange full of opinionated garbage, propaganda, and scams. It's a waste . . . your . . . time . . . land!! Blogexplosion says,

"The concept is very simple. You read other blog sites and they in return visit your blog. Blogexplosion is the internet's first blog exchange where thousands of bloggers visit each other's blogs in order to receive tons of blog traffic. . . . Note in order to buy advertising from Blog Explosion you must be a member. . . . 25,000 [30 second guaranteed visitors for] $130.00."

Fear of Submitting Brought on by Urban Myth?

Quite a few surfers say things like

I wouldn't advise you to use autosubmitters, many Search Engines don't allow auto-submissions,

I think autosubmitting is like a quick fix.

I've posted my response elsewhere. Here's what I said: You guys sometimes advise against automated submissions, but you never provide data/facts to back up what you say. Small European search engines are unlikely to randomly crawl your sites. You have to bring your site to their attention. If everyone relied exclusively on big search engines for traffic, this World Wide Web would not be a net--just a one-way toll road. Even MSN offers automated multiple search-engine submissions (but please note that their service is not free). See for example Microsoft submit info or http://submitit.bcentral.com/subcats2.htm Microsoft says,

Maintaining top listings on a variety of search engines helps drive new visitors to bigfishtackle.com. . . . It's very important to stay diligent with search engine submissions. . . . When he's pressed for time, he knows that [automatic submissions are] still working for him, automatically checking his listings and resubmitting URLs on a regular basis.

Why would Microsoft automate submissions to various engines, directories, and services if those services picked up on everything the big search engines indexed? And why would German and Dutch engines pay much attention to English directories? Anyway, who says the whole world can't submit to foreign-language search engines? And who says anyone is completely reliant on quick fixes? Most people utilize various services and techniques. For example, Google may index DMOZ but DMOZ does not index Google. DMOZ is run by human editors who manually choose sites. The BBC in England has a search engine/directory run by human editors, too. They found one of my sites through a press release -- not from Google or Yahoo, etc. And if being listed on FFA's spells doom for a site, then we are all doomed: any stranger can submit any site to any FFA from anywhere in the world. Who's to say the aliens aren't busy submitting your site to 100s of thousands of FFAs right this second. We can't label the various sectors -- the Internet is too complex for generalizations.

I can't be sure what the problem is, but if I was you I would stay clear of txhost.info. My experience with them says to me that they are both unprofessional and intrusive. If I divine correctly, they jump to snap decisions based upon a lack of expertise. It's a waste of time, and their offer of a 5gb bandwidth with no control panel (just ftp) does not match the other readily available plans out here in this cyberland of complete strangers. Quite often, it seems, free hosting plans are tacked together by teenagers pretending to briefly reign as "kings of the hill." I've even talked to one or two of them on the phone. Then there's free hosts and there's fringe hosts. The fringe hosts are free, too, but you're left wondering about the owners/operators/hobbyists. Are they nosey pranksters and mean-spirited drunks? Are they the smallest of small-time political hacks? An unemployed snake-oil salesman would find it easy to set up a borderline server next to the beer fridge. Maybe they don't like Canadians. I guess we have to give them the benefit of the doubt. I guess we have to hope they're not phishing: I guess we have to hope they're not scamming users into surrendering private information that will later be used for identity theft. I know quite a few wealthy men and women who would not even give a free host the email addresses they use to decoy (i.e., avoid) bulk spam, never mind names and phone numbers. But like I said, I can't be sure about what's going on at txhost.info. And that's possibly because that's the way most webhosting businesses play the game. Ah well, pretty soon they'll all get gobbled up by lawyers, fighters, whistle blowers, insurance companies, and irate moms. free hosting
